Thorup's Style
#1
've possibly seen the weirdest statistical metrics for our style of play that probably go against most of our preconceived ideas' about what we've been doing this season.

Now, there's some bits I think make sense - I've said we don't go long enough (although we had started being a bit more unpredictable here) on occasions this season.
Others have commented on "pointless" short passing - perhaps that is slightly more relevant than I'd give credit to.
The progressive pass stat, alongside some of the others, may help explain the poor (possibly worst) home atmosphere I've encountered when the fans are generally happy with the ownership / coach - aside from the drum section there's been close to nothing from the fans. Maybe we are "boring" despite scoring so many goals?
One point i've seen made that's probably relevant is when we get it right, it doesn't seem to take many passes to get us into goal-scoring positions - this has been helped by lots of speculative goals from Sainz and more recently a couple from Nunez, I suppose.
Credit to louorns on X who's looking into it a bit more - we are seemingly, on the face of it, a very one-dimensional passing team that doesn't do much progressive passing.
I can't be the only one slightly shocked at this, but a very quick check of Fbref suggests the above table does add up?

I find those stats staggering on the whole and can't understand why we are not actually in the bottom 3. Not that I am challenging them as not being true. Does it mean our many goals then are brilliant ones (and would have unusually low Xg? Would make sense in terms of some brilliance from Borja to date.
I think these set of metrics do make sense re. our defence and the pressure we put ourselves under. I reckon some 8 to 10 goals conceded have been giveaways. Maybe that's generous too.
The switch of play stat is interesting.
I've enjoyed our play overall to Wagner's team before somehow. I've no idea why but think I'm more hopeful because of the youngsters that have been brought in. I still believe it's a transition season and for me anyway next season is my personal benchmark for success. I expect top 6 next season for sure but also agree with that supercomputer analysis (based on over a 1000 bits of data?) that suggested a 10th finish this time round.

Well found and very interesting and it will help me analyse our play much more (I am an away supporter as I live so far away and our away support is always good to me....last time I was at CR I was underwhelmed by our home support must admit and that is some time ago). I trust what you say about a quiet level of support and certainly many fans seem unhappy at the slow build up.

Edit: just read posts by Repman and Bethnal on the PU and both really insightful...and moreover, hopeful, especially for next season
